Papering the fifth wall of a Canmore bathroom
Bathrooms rarely have wall space to spare – mirrors, tile and fixtures claim almost everything. This Canmore bathroom put the pattern where nothing competes with it: an art deco fan paper in blush, orchid and gold linework across the entire ceiling, plus the one open wall with its recessed storage niche. Framed by rose-pink walls and trim over dark slate tile, the ceiling turns the smallest room in the condo into the most deliberate one. Ceiling installation is a different discipline from walls – gravity, humidity and squareness all work against you overhead.

Project challenge
A ceiling hang fights gravity for the whole open time of the adhesive, in the most humid room of the home, over a shower and vanity that limit ladder placement. Ceilings are also almost never square – a repeating fan pattern makes any drift obvious against the trim lines on all four sides – and the fixture penetrations have to land inside the pattern without tearing it.
Our solution
We squared the layout to the longest sightline – the run you see entering the room – so the fan rows read true from the doorway, and accepted the trims into the cove where the eye cannot follow a line. Drops were hung with extended open time and continuous overhead support, edges trimmed to the painted cove and casing, fixture openings cut in place, and a moisture-appropriate adhesive with rolled, sealed edges handles the bath humidity long-term. The same paper wraps the niche wall, trimmed clean into the recess and against the tile line.
Overhead and around the niche
The two surfaces that make this room – the papered ceiling and the niche wall it hands off to.

Surface review
Ceiling and wall surfaces primed and sealed so the paper bonded evenly overhead and the edges could be rolled and sealed against bathroom humidity.
Installation focus
Layout squared to the entry sightline, drops hung with extended open time and continuous support, fixture openings cut in place, and clean trims into the cove, casing, niche and tile line.
Result
A bathroom where the ceiling is the feature – the fifth wall carrying the pattern the walls had no room for, in a palette matched to the rose-pink paint and slate tile.
Thinking about a wallpapered ceiling?
Ceilings are the most under-used surface in the house – and the most demanding to paper, which is why so few installers offer it. Powder rooms, bathrooms and nooks are ideal first ceilings: small areas, big effect. Send a photo and we will tell you honestly whether your ceiling and its light are a good candidate.
