A dark botanical wrap for a Springbank Hill walk-in closet

A walk-in closet is a small room that gets seen up close, every day, from a step away – which is exactly why it rewards a bold paper and punishes a sloppy seam. This Springbank Hill dressing room was wrapped floor-to-ceiling in a dark-navy Rifle Paper Co. botanical – roses, ferns and wildflowers on a near-black ground – carried unbroken around the inside corners and up over the door head, set against custom taupe cabinetry, brass hardware and a grey panelled entry. The dark ground makes the room feel like a jewel box; it also means the pattern has to line up perfectly, because there is nowhere for a mismatched seam to hide.

The finished closet: the botanical carries up and over the door head, so the entry reads as part of the same continuous pattern.

Project challenge

Closets are all edges. This one is narrow, with custom cabinetry on one side, a cased door on the other, tight inside corners front and back, and a low ceiling that puts the crown line right in your sightline. A dark, dense botanical is the hardest ground to hang: on near-black paper any gap at a seam flashes as a light line, and any lean in a drop is obvious against the vertical millwork. And because the pattern had to wrap over the door head and around the corners without breaking, the whole room had to be planned as one surface, not four separate walls.

Our solution

We set the layout from a centreline so the motif lands balanced on the main wall, then sequenced the drops so the repeat carries around each inside corner and over the door head and re-enters plumb on the far side. Every drop was checked for plumb before trimming, seams were butted and rolled tight on the non-woven ground so no light line shows on the dark print, and each edge against the cabinetry, casing and baseboard was cut in place with a fresh blade.

Around the cabinetry and corners

The room is defined by its millwork and its corners – here is how the pattern lands against them.

Against the built-ins: the paper trimmed clean to the cabinetry so the botanical reads as the backdrop the millwork sits in front of.

The inside corner: the mirrored botanical carried around the return so the pattern never breaks where two walls meet.

Surface review

Walls were primed and sealed before hanging so the non-woven paper bonded evenly on the dark ground and can be removed cleanly down the road without tearing the drywall face.

Installation focus

A centred layout kept the motif balanced, with plumb-checked drops, tight-rolled seams that show no light line on the near-black print, and fresh-blade trims at the cabinetry, casing and door head.

Result

A jewel-box walk-in closet – the dark botanical running unbroken around the cabinetry, corners and doorway, so a small utilitarian room becomes the most finished space on the floor.

Wrapping a small room in a dark print?

Closets, powder rooms and dressing rooms are where a dark, dense pattern pays off – and where seam and trim work has to be exact, because you see every edge from a step away. Our installation standards page shows what finished seams and trim cuts should look like on a paper like this.
