A tailored check for a basement bedroom
This Legacy homeowner wanted the basement bedroom to feel deliberate rather than leftover, and chose a navy and grey buffalo check with a woven texture – a pattern that reads like fabric on the wall. A check is the least forgiving choice in the book: it is a printed grid, and every framing quirk a basement wall hides shows up in it. The payoff when it is hung true is a room that looks upholstered, not papered.

Project challenge
A buffalo check is a set of horizontal and vertical bands – in effect a level and a plumb line printed across the entire wall. Basement framing rarely cooperates: this wall runs from a door casing on one side to a window return under a bulkhead on the other, and the ceiling line is textured rather than crisp. If the grid is hung off the ceiling or the casing instead of true level and plumb, every row telegraphs the error across the full width of the room.
Our solution
We struck an independent plumb line for the first drop instead of trusting the casing, then kept the horizontal bands level across the run and let any framing drift die quietly into the corners and trim cuts where the eye does not measure it. Seams were placed so the weave texture carries across them, and the cuts at the casing, baseboard and window return were trimmed tight so the check finishes like a tailored panel.
Square grid, awkward wall
The test of a check is the edges: where the grid meets trim, ceiling and corners, it either stays square or gives the game away.

Surface review
Painted drywall checked and prepared first – a light woven ground over navy shows any bump or ridge left underneath in raking basement light.
Installation focus
Independent plumb start, level check rows held across the full run, seams buried in the weave, and tight cuts at casing, baseboard and window return.
Result
A basement bedroom that reads as designed rather than finished later – the check does the tailoring, the walls just had to stay square.
Checks, plaids and grids that stay true
Grid patterns punish shortcuts more than any mural – see the same discipline on the tartan plaid walk-in closet in Elbow Valley, and our installation standards for how we plan a plumb-true layout.
