Clear security film for every glazed door in a South Calgary home

This inner-city home in South Calgary, a few blocks from Marda Loop, has more glass at door height than most houses: a full-lite back door, a vented-glass mudroom door, a side entry door under a transom, and a sidelight beside the navy front door. Each one is a full pane at reach height, right next to the lock. The homeowners asked for glass-retention film on every one of them, without tint and without hiding the view.

Project challenge

A glazed door is the easiest way into a house. Break the pane, reach through, turn the deadbolt. With three glass doors and a sidelight at grade, this home had four of those openings and five panes, and every one of them is in plain view of a laneway or a side yard. The owners wanted a glass-retention layer on those panes without swapping the doors, without dark tint, and without film edges that show on a painted white frame.

Installed solution

XPEL 8 mil optically clear safety and security film was wet-mounted edge to edge on each pane: the full-lite back door, both panes of the vented mudroom door, the side entry door glass, and the front sidelight. Bonded to the glass, the film is designed to hold fractured glass together as a sheet after impact, which can reduce loose shards and may add delay before an opening is created. Any delay depends on the glass, frame, attachment, tools and persistence; the film is not a break-in guarantee and does not make the glass unbreakable. From inside and out the doors look exactly as they did before.

The other openings from the South Calgary install

Every door was photographed as installed, from the side the family sees each day. Nothing about the glass changed visually, which is the whole argument for clear security film over bars or replacement doors.

Glass review

Each door was checked for glass type, frame condition and how the pane sits in its stop before the film was cut. Vented door glass gets two separate pieces so the moving sash is never bridged.

Installation focus

Edge-to-edge coverage on every pane, clean relief cuts around the lock and lever side, and a dust-free wet mount so the finished film reads as clear glass on white and navy doors alike.

Result

All five door-height panes now carry a glass-retention film. A struck pane can be held together as a sheet rather than scattering, which may slow a reach-through, while the house looks the same from the street.

Planning Note

What to check before security film on glazed doors

What security film can do depends on the product, the glass underneath, the frame and the attachment detail, not on thickness alone. A few checks confirm whether a door is a good candidate.

Count the door-height glass

Back doors, mudroom doors, side entries and sidelights are the panes closest to a lock. Review them together; filming one door and leaving the next one bare leaves the easier route open.

Anchor the frame

Film can hold fractured glass as a sheet, but the frame still has to retain that sheet. A compatible wet-glaze or mechanical attachment may be required for a particular opening and should be named in the quote, not implied.

Vented and divided glass

Sliding vents and transoms are filmed as separate pieces. Each pane needs its own edge-to-edge bond, and a moving sash is never bridged by the film.
