Three privacy problems, one film, one visit

Most privacy film jobs in Calgary are one window. This Legacy home in SE Calgary had three different sightlines to close – the sidelights either side of the front door, a bathroom window beside the shower, and a garage window onto the side yard – and every one of them had the same requirement: privacy that does not depend on a blind being down or a light being off. Silver Tech frosted film answers all three the same way. It obscures in both directions around the clock, so the glass is as private at 9pm with the room lit as it is at noon – the failure mode that catches people out with reflective film – and it keeps the daylight, which is the whole reason each of these windows exists.

Both sidelights carry the frost; the door’s own lite is left clear, so the entry still reads open rather than shuttered.

The entry sidelights

On most Calgary entries it is not the door lite that exposes the house – it is the sidelights. The door’s own window sits high and small; the sidelights run floor to head height either side of it, which is exactly the band a person standing on the step looks through. Narrow sidelights are also the least forgiving panels in a house to film: tall and thin, so any drift off-square shows against the stile the whole length of the panel, and inspected from arm’s length by every person who rings the bell.

Each sidelight was measured and cut individually rather than from one shared template, because entry frames are rarely identical side to side. Glass was deep-cleaned and the frames masked, then the frost was laid in one piece per panel and finished tight to the stops – no border, no seam. The pair was checked together, from the step and from the hall, before the masking came off. The door lite was left clear on purpose.

The bathroom window

A bathroom window is the one pane where privacy cannot be conditional. Blinds solve it only while they are closed, and they are the thing most likely to be left open on the day it matters. Bathroom glass is also the hardest place to hide a mistake: the room is bright and hard-surfaced, so the window is usually the single brightest object in it and anything trapped under the film is backlit all day. A double-hung has two sashes that move independently, so the frost has to match across the meeting rail or the join reads as a line when the window is shut.

Both sashes were treated as one visual unit: glass deep-cleaned, frames masked, then each pane cut individually and laid edge to edge so the frost density matches across the meeting rail. Working around fixed dark tile and matte black fittings meant containing the wet application tightly rather than flooding the sill. The result reads as factory-obscured glass rather than as a film applied afterwards.

The garage window

A garage window is the difference between working in daylight and working under a bulb. It is also a clear view of everything you own that does not fit in the house. Garages are the least controlled environment we film in: this one was mid-finish – drywall taped but not painted – which means airborne dust, the one thing that ruins a frosted panel permanently. Garage glass also tends to be builder stock in a slightly out-of-square opening, so a film cut square to the pane can end up visibly unsquare to the trim around it.

We filmed to the glass, not to the opening: the pane was measured on its own and the frost cut and finished to it, so the panel is square to what people actually look at. The glass was deep-cleaned immediately before application rather than at the start of the visit – in a dusty space a surface cleaned twenty minutes early is not clean any more. Edges were run tight to the stops so there is no lip for dust to collect against later.

Closer on the glass

Frost quality is judged at arm’s length, in the light – not from across the room.

Surface review

Every pane deep-cleaned and every frame masked immediately before application – sealed-in contamination under a frosted panel is permanent, and it is backlit all day.

Installation focus

Each panel measured and cut on its own, never from a shared template – sidelights matched as a pair, sashes matched across the meeting rail, the garage pane cut to the glass rather than the opening.

Result

Three sightlines closed day and night without anyone remembering a blind, and the daylight each room was designed around left intact.

Thinking about privacy film for more than one window?

Entries, bathrooms and garages are the three surfaces we frost most often in Calgary, and doing them in one visit is the efficient way to do it – one setup, one clean-down, one quote. Frosted film is permanent, works in both directions around the clock, and unlike a reflective film it does not reverse at night when the room is brighter than the yard. Send a photo of each pane and we will confirm the fit and quote the set the same day.
