Solar window film for two kids bedrooms in Heritage Pointe

This family home in Heritage Pointe, just south of Calgary, has high transom windows in both kids bedrooms. The exposure catches strong afternoon and evening sun, and because the windows sit high on the wall, blinds and curtains could not fully block the light without making the rooms feel closed in. Both bedrooms ran too bright for naps and too warm through summer evenings — exactly when the kids needed the rooms most.

Project challenge

High transom windows are great for privacy and light, but they are hard to shade: they sit above standard blind sizes and the sun tracks straight through them into the room. In kids bedrooms the problem shows up at the worst times — glare during afternoon naps and stored heat at bedtime. The solution had to keep the daylight and the clean look of open glass while cutting the solar load.

Installed solution

A heat-control solar film with a neutral finish was installed on the bedroom windows in both rooms. Each pane was cleaned, wet-mounted, edged to the frame line, and squeegeed clear. From inside the glass still reads bright and open; from the street the panes read slightly toned against the stucco, with no mirror effect.

Glass review

The bedrooms have sealed insulating glass units. Film density was matched to the glass build so the combined unit stays within thermal stress limits while still cutting meaningful heat.

Installation focus

High transom placement meant careful ladder access inside finished, furnished kids rooms — clean drop-sheet work, edge control on the narrow panes, and both rooms matched so the film reads identically.

Result

Both bedrooms hold their daylight but lose the harsh glare band and the late-day heat build-up. No blackout blinds were needed, and the windows keep their open look inside and out.

Planning Note

What to check before solar film on bedroom windows

Bedrooms reward solar film more than most rooms — comfort at nap time and bedtime is the whole point. A few checks make sure the film fits the glass and the exposure.

Confirm the glass

Sealed units with low-e coatings each respond differently to film. Confirm the glass build before selecting film density.

Map sun exposure

West- and south-facing bedrooms take the biggest late-day load in the Calgary area. Treat the rooms where heat lands at bedtime first.

Think beyond blinds

High transom and feature windows often cannot be covered by standard blinds. Film shades the glass itself, so the shape of the window stops mattering.
