A jewel-tone peony mural for a Canmore bedroom

This Canmore bedroom got the boldest treatment in the condo: oversized peonies in teal, violet and near-black, every petal traced in fine gold linework, hung as a mural across the walls that frame the doorway. Below the mural a deep plum painted band grounds the room; through the door, a rose-pink hallway picks up the palette. The mural is one continuous printed image, which means the doorway is not an interruption – it is the test: the composition has to leave one side of the opening and land level and true on the other.

The mural carries across the doorway wall and re-enters level on the far side – the hardest test of a panel layout.

Project challenge

A doorway splits a mural wall into two panels that must still read as one image – any drop in height or drift off plumb where the pattern re-enters is instantly visible on flowers this large. The two-tone treatment adds a hard horizontal datum the mural must meet cleanly along its whole run, and the wall carried outlets and fixture boxes that land mid-bloom, where a rough cutout would ruin a petal.

Our solution

We set a level datum line for the plum band first, then hung the mural to it, sequencing panels around the doorway so the image re-enters at exactly the same height and plumb on the far side. Fixture and outlet cutouts were traced and cut in place so plates sit inside the printed petals, and the bottom edge was trimmed to a dead-straight line against the plum band the full length of the run.

Across the doorway and the two-tone line

Two hard geometry problems – a doorway break and a painted datum – and how the mural crosses both.

Surface review

Walls primed and sealed so the non-woven panels bonded evenly, with the painted plum band cut in first to give the mural a true, straight edge to meet.

Installation focus

Panels sequenced around the doorway so the image re-enters level and plumb; outlet and fixture cutouts traced in place so cover plates sit cleanly inside the printed blooms.

Result

A bedroom that reads as one designed composition – mural, plum band and rose hallway in a single palette, in a room that started as builder-plain drywall.

Wrapping a mural around openings?

Doorways, windows and two-tone walls are where mural layouts are won or lost – the image has to survive every interruption and land true. Our installation standards page shows the layout and seam quality to expect.
