What security film can—and cannot—do for commercial glass
Security film is bonded to architectural glass to help hold fractured pieces together after impact. When the complete system is suitable, that retention may add delay before an opening is created. It does not make glass unbreakable, bulletproof or entry-proof, and it does not guarantee prevention of injury, property damage, theft or closure.
Storefronts & retail
Entry doors, sidelites, display glass and accessible ground-floor panes reviewed with door hardware, after-hours exposure, lighting, alarms and cameras.
Offices, clinics & restaurants
Public-facing glass, interior safety concerns, privacy and operating-hour constraints documented before product selection or scheduling.
Schools & managed properties
Repeatable pane schedules, access coordination, attachment review, technical documents and written handoff for facilities teams and consultants.
3M cautions that many factors affect break-and-entry outcomes and that certain applications require an impact-protection attachment system. Read the manufacturer limitations.
The six things the quote must specify

1. Glass
Pane dimensions, observed construction, coatings or Low-E position, existing damage and any assumptions still requiring label or consultant confirmation.
2. Frame
Frame material, depth, condition, captured edge, gaskets, sealants, hardware and whether the frame can accept the proposed attachment detail.
3. Film
Exact manufacturer and product, film gauge, published data, current film-to-glass approval and appearance—not only a generic “security film” label.
4. Attachment
Film-only, wet-glaze or mechanical attachment stated explicitly, with preparation and cure requirements where applicable.
5. Access
Operating hours, alarms, keys, lifts, protected work areas, occupants, sequencing and realistic disruption captured before a schedule is promised.
6. Handoff
Inspection timing, cleaning guidance, product documents, exclusions and separate workmanship and manufacturer warranty terms.
Use Calgary crime data as context—not as a film specification
Community counts can help prioritize a review, but they cannot tell you what film or attachment belongs on a particular opening. Explore the Calgary break-in map and practical guide, then review the actual glass, frame, door hardware and response layers on site.

Budget first
Use the Calgary window-film estimator. Commercial security film currently plans at $16–$25/sq ft before any specified attachment.
Other commercial goals
For solar, privacy, decorative or anti-graffiti film, use the commercial window-film overview instead of forcing every need into a security product.
Commercial security film questions
Does commercial security film prevent smash-and-grab entry?
No film should be sold as a break-in guarantee. A suitable system can help retain fractured glass and may add delay before an opening is created. The outcome depends on the glass, frame, film, attachment, tools, impact and persistence, so WSI does not promise a fixed delay or prevented loss.
Does a storefront need edge attachment?
Not every opening uses the same detail. Attachment is reviewed when the retained film-glass sheet needs a stronger connection to the frame. Product guidance, glass size, frame construction, edge access and the project risk determine whether wet-glaze or a mechanical system is appropriate.
What does commercial security window film cost in Calgary?
The current WSI planning range is $16–$25 per square foot for commercial security film, with attachment quoted separately where specified. Pane size, film gauge, frame condition, access, operating-hour restrictions and documentation can change the final price. Photos and dimensions are enough for a useful first range.
Can installation be scheduled outside business hours?
Often, yes. WSI confirms access, alarm contacts, work-zone protection, lift or ladder needs, product handling, cure and inspection requirements before committing to an evening or staged schedule. Large panes and attachment work may need a different sequence than film-only installation.
Is commercial security film bulletproof?
No. Window film is not bulletproof and is not a substitute for rated ballistic glazing. It is a glass-retention component that may contribute containment and delay when specified with compatible glass, frame and attachment. Ballistic or blast threats require a qualified engineered system.
What should a property manager send for a first review?
Send one photo from inside and outside, close-ups of the frame edges and door hardware, approximate pane dimensions, the opening of greatest concern, operating hours and any existing alarm, access-control or insurer requirements. WSI will identify remaining assumptions before presenting a system or price.
Start with the openings, not a generic product
Send inside and outside photos, frame close-ups, rough pane dimensions, operating hours and the opening of greatest concern. WSI will identify what can be estimated remotely and what still needs a site review.
