Why texture and wallpaper do not mix
Orange-peel, knockdown and stipple finishes are common on Calgary drywall. They hide small flaws in the taping, which is why builders use them. For wallpaper they are a problem: the paper only touches the high points of the texture, so it bonds unevenly, and every bump reads through the finished face.
Papering straight over texture typically shows up as:
- Telegraphing — the texture pattern shows through, worst on metallic, silk, dark and flat-finish papers and under side light
- Weak adhesion — the adhesive grips the peaks and bridges the valleys, so the paper can lift or bubble
- Open seams — butt joints cannot close cleanly where they cross a ridge, so edges lift at the high points
The fix: skim the wall smooth, then prime it
The wall is brought to a smooth, sealed surface before the first drop goes up. A drywall finish this smooth is what the drywall trade calls a Level 5 finish. Our sequence:
- Assess — texture type and depth, cracks, previous repairs, paint condition, and any sign of moisture
- Repair — fill holes and cracks, fix loose tape and damaged patches
- Skim coat — joint compound over the textured area, left to dry, then sanded smooth and dust removed
- Prime — a wallcovering primer suited to the paper and its adhesive; where the manufacturer specifies a primer, that instruction governs
A skim coat adds labour, material and drying time: the compound has to dry before primer and paper go on. It is part of doing the job right, not an upsell. We judge the texture from your photos and build the prep into the quote before the install is booked, so it is never a surprise on the day. Our wallpaper installation cost guide explains which prep the standard rate includes and when a wall in poor condition needs additional surface work.
Walls we skimmed before papering
- Yorkville bedroom: skimmed and primed before a metallic gold geometric, because a foil ground shows every high spot and trowel mark
- Winston Heights bedroom: the wall primed and skimmed flat before the mural panels were hung from a laser line
- Heritage Hills, Cochrane: the substrate prepared flat so an embossed reptile paper sat on a true plane in three rooms
What about peel-and-stick?
Peel-and-stick relies on a pressure-sensitive adhesive, and texture reduces the surface it can grip, so adhesion drops on orange-peel and knockdown walls. It works best on smooth, sound, low-heat walls. Our peel-and-stick guide covers when it is the right product and when it is not.
What to send for a textured wall
One photo of the whole wall, a close-up of the texture with a phone light held flat against the wall (side light shows the texture honestly), rough dimensions, and a link to the wallpaper you have in mind. That is enough for us to say whether the wall needs a skim coat and to price the prep with the install.
