A single accent wall in a blue bedroom

This kids bedroom in Springbank, west of Calgary, is painted a deep royal blue on all four walls. The family kept the blue and chose to paper only the wall behind the bed with Hohenberger’s “Sweet Sheep” (product 26830), a cream-ground sheep print, so the room keeps its colour while the bed wall becomes the soft focal point.

Project challenge

An accent wall against a strong paint colour lives at its edges. The paper has to finish dead straight into the two blue corners and around the window casing, because any wander shows as a blue line against a cream ground. A small repeat such as a sheep motif also has to be started level, or the rows read as sloping across the wall.

The room is a child's bedroom in daily use, so furniture, toys and the bed had to be moved, protected and put back.

Edges first

Corners and the window casing are struck to a plumb line before the first drop, so the cream paper meets the blue walls in a clean straight line.

Level rows

A small motif is unforgiving: the first drop sets the row height for the whole wall, so it is levelled to the ceiling line and checked before the next drop is hung.
